GILES SMITH: BIG HANDS, BIGGER HEART

At 5-foot-10, Giles Smith is almost a full person shorter than most of the world’s top freestyle sprinters: Nathan Adrian, 6-foot-5; Alain Bernard, 6-foot-5; Cullen Jones, 6-foot-5; James Magnussen, 6-foot-5…you get the picture.



But what the University of Arizona sophomore lacks in size, he more than makes up for in heart…and hands…and feet.



At least that’s what he believes – which is really all that matters – and the results speak for themselves.



“I am one of the smallest sprinters in the NCAA and possibly the smallest on the U.S. National Team,” said Smith, who hails from the Baltimore, Md., area. “Although I may be shorter than a lot of my competitors, I have big hands and feet for my size. I believe that height can be very overrated.



“I have been someone who coaches have said could never be good because I was too short, but it doesn’t matter what size you are as long as you have heart in this sport.”



A 14-time Maryland state record holder and the first Baltimore high school swimmer to swim the 50 free in less than 21 seconds, Smith was the fastest freestyle sprinter coming out of high school in 2009. With over 50 college scholarship offers, he chose the up-and-coming University of Tennessee program but almost immediately felt that something wasn’t quite for him.



He said he had a difficult time finding a support system and quickly realized it wasn’t the best fit for him.



His confidence damaged, he returned to his club, Eagle Swim Team, and worked hard to regain his moxie. Almost a year later, he returned to college and college swimming at the University of Arizona -- the program he had wanted to attend all along. “It took me a little over a year to gain my confidence back,” Smith said. “That was a difficult year because I felt I belonged in college swimming.



My parents were so supportive of me chasing my dreams that I just started to believe in myself again and before you knew it, I was dropping chunks of time like an age grouper.”



It was because of his parents – his mom, in particular, that Smith got involved with the sport in the first place. She took him to Mommy and me swim classes when he was little, and by the age of six, he was enrolled in swim classes.



Now, with a year at Arizona under his belt, Smith said his confidence is at an all-time high – and that showed in his recent results at NCAA Championships.



In addition to helping his teammates win the 200 medley relay (setting a new American record) and a top 5 overall finish, he finished a close second to California’s Tom Shields in the 100 butterfly.



He knows he will see Shields again this summer at Trials – and he’s expecting another battle.



“It’s always fun getting to race Tom as he brings out the best in me. I am looking forward to racing him the rest of my career,” Smith said. “This year at Arizona went very well. I have been blessed with great teammates who have allowed me to improve every day. For the most part, I reached my goals I set at the beginning of the year. I am so thankful to get to wear an A on my cap every day.”



As one of a select few African-Americans in the upper ranks of the sport, Smith said growing up he struggled to find role models of color in swimming. Instead, he looked to his father, who taught him to reach for the stars his whole life.



“He told me when I was nine that one day I would be an Olympic swimmer, and he truly meant it,” Smith said. “I feel that the racial gap is getting smaller in swimming as there are a lot of minorities swimming very fast right now. More progress is needed, but overall, swimming is becoming way more diverse than when I started.”



Having just missed the cut to compete at 2008 Trials in Omaha, Smith said that experience taught him a lot about perseverance and the ups and downs that accompany the sport and life.



This year, he is highly motivated to have the greatest meet of his life and swim to the best of his abilities – and hopefully, that will be enough to make his dream come true.



“Making the U.S. National Team has given me a huge mental boost,” said Smith, who is a journalism major with aspirations of being a television broadcaster some day – possibly calling swimming events in the future. “It for sure has led me to believe that I can compete against the world’s best and succeed.”

A PIZZA RECIPE (healthy, of course)

Do you looooove pizza? Ha, who are we kidding...of course you do! I do, I mean...I really love pizza. I could probably sit and eat an entire medium sized pizza all by myself, now that's just unhealthy- I know.
SO, while everyone else was sleeping I found a super delicious, super healthy, super easy pizza recipe.

These pizzas are a perfect dinner when you're starving after workout and you have all that homework looming over your head. Plus, they're fast. Either you (or your loving parents) can whip them up quick.

Whole Wheat Pita Pizza

Total Time: 35 min
Prep Time: 25 min
Cook Time: 10 min
Serves: 4 (and who are we kidding, if you just swam 6,000 yards this recipe only serves 2)

Ingredients:
  • 1 teaspoon(s) olive oil
  • 1 medium red onion, sliced
  • 2 clove(s) garlic, crushed with press
  • 1/4 teaspoon(s) crushed red pepper
  • 8 ounce(s) broccoli florets, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup(s) water
  • 1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 1 can(s) (15- to 19-ounce) garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup(s) part-skim ricotta cheese
  • 4 6-inch whole-wheat pitas, each split horizontally in half
  • 1/2 cup(s) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 medium plum tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch chunks

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. In nonstick 12-inch skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat until hot. Add onion and cook 7 to 10 minutes or until golden, stirring occasionally. Add garlic and crushed red pepper, and cook 30 seconds, stirring. Add broccoli flowerets, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 cup water; heat to boiling. Reduce heat to medium and cook, covered, 5 minutes or until broccoli is tender-crisp.
  2. Meanwhile, in small bowl, with potato masher or fork, mash beans with ricotta and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt until almost smooth.
  3. Arrange pita halves on 2 large cookie sheets. Bake 3 minutes or until lightly toasted. Spread bean mixture on toasted pitas. Top with broccoli mixture and sprinkle with Parmesan. Bake 7 to 10 minutes long or until heated through. Sprinkle with tomatoes to serve.

Who is Missy Franklin??


If you don't know who Missy Franklin is, you should. You really, really should. Because, she is the ONE to watch at Olympic trials and at the Olympics. She's also one of the sweetest team players this USA Team has to offer.

Missy Franklin is only sixteen. That's a junior in high school and she's already been to the Olympic Trials back in 2008 at only thirteen years of age! What were you doing when you were thirteen?! I'm pretty sure most of us were more concerened about how we looked in our suit at practice then making Olympic Trials. WOW, this chick totally rocks and here's a few awesome reasons why.

1) Missy has now turned down up to $130,000 in endorsement money and going PRO so she can continue to be a part of her high school swim team and join a college team! "Team is so important to me," she says. "I love being part of a team. It, for me, is one of the best feelings in the world."

2) She is a WORLD RECORD HOLDER! That's right, she was part of the USA Women's team that broke the world record for the 4x100  short course meters medley relay at the December 2011 Duel in The Pool Meet AND she holds the World Record in the 200 Backstroke for short course meters which she set in October of 2011!

3) She's SMART. This girl is a junior in high school and is taking Advanced Placement classes!

4) She has size 13 Feet!

5) She has a HUGE Heart. This girl is nothing but love. There isn't one place I could find something negative about her, and that's saying a lot seeing as she's been ALL over the news lately.

So there you have it, this girl is taking the swimming world by storm!

Tuesday's countdown to the 2012 Olympic Games: 184 DAYS

It's almost here. Can you hear the national anthem? Can you taste Gold? I'm sure TEAM USA can!!!!!

We are only 184 days away from the 2012 London Olympics. Which means....We are only 154 days away from Olympic Trials!!! I know, you're stoked right?!

If, for some crazy reason you're not stoked (and let's face it, YOU'RE STOKED) watch this video of Team USA vs Team Europe at Duel In The Pool back in December. As you will see in the video, THESE SWIMMER CHICKS ROCK!

Healthy Recipe of the week: Tacos with Olympian Garrett Webber Gale

These Tacos are SUPER easy and delicious. This recipe comes from Olympic Swimmer Garrett Webber Gale. His father actually threw together these yummy tacos.

Ingredients:
1 Package Firm (or Extra firm) Tofu
1 Lime
Small Bunch of Cilantro
1 tomato
1 Jalapeno pepper
Fresh corn tortillas
vegetarian refried beans (check labels to make sure there are no added mystery ingredients- If you can't pronounce whats in it, put it back on the shelf)
Sharp Cheddar Cheese

Directions:
Marinate tofu in lime juice, cilantro, chopped tomoato, and diced jalapeno peppers (SWIMMERS LET YOUR PARENTS DEAL WITH THIS HOTHOT PEPPER, DONT CUT IT YOURSELF) let them marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Warm refried beans with a dash of olive oil in a skillet.

Warm tortialls in microwave (easiest way) or in a skillet on the stove.

Load tortillas with tofu marinate, beans, and just a dusting of sharp cheddar cheese, as Garrett says "Cheese with strong taste allows you to use a little less and still enjoy flavor."
